Using a smartphone as a tool within a escape room — Escape Rooms Bucharest x Samsung

Ten bloggers from Romania were invited by Samsung to test out the new Note Edge smartphone. The twist? They were allowed to take the phone into an escape room at Escape Rooms Bucharest ( and test the phone’s capabilities too.

The bloggers were split into two teams and each team we’re assuming received two smartphones each in order to help them escape from the room. The first stage involved unlocking all four phones, with two phones having a unlock pattern that needed to be figured out and the other two phones needed a number pin code entered. Clues related to the game were sent to the participants in the room by SMS and could be received on the phones. There was also additional puzzles and games stored in the phone’s image gallery that needed to be solved. Along the way there was also an opportunity to use the phone’s flashlight, its camera to capture a QR code and phone numbers that were called in order to progress the game along.

Recently ExitGamesUK wrote a Mechanics Monday blog about the potential implications of introducing mobile phones to escape rooms, which you can read here. Also one of the bloggers who attended the Samsung event posted a short Youtube video of their experience which you can see below.

Leave a comment below with your thoughts – what do you think of this escape room marketing stunt by Samsung?

Also Enigma Escape in the UK have a Kickstarter running at the moment and are trying to fundraise £5,000 so they can bring their vision to life. Best of luck guys! Support their Kickstarter here which is running until April 8th, donate to get a cool medallion and check out their Kickstarter funding video too.

That sounds like a lot of fun. I wish they ran that in NYC.

It would be awesome if Samsung replicated this stunt elsewhere in the world!
