Summer always brings the promise of new adventures and for two kids, it does.
Gravity Falls, a cartoon show that airs on the Disney channel follows two kids – Dipper and Mabel and the summer adventures they have. They are sent off to spend time at The Mystery Shack, owned by their Grunkle Stan Pines in a small town called Gravity Falls.
Last month, the show wrapped up its entire storyline with a three part finale called Weirdmageddon. And that could have been where the story ended, except for one thing – something appeared after the credits.
Bill Cipher is the bad guy of the series appearing as a one-eyed, yellow floating triangle in the cartoon. From the show, it’s know he came from the 2nd Dimension where everything is flat and he tried to find ways to gain access to the 3rd Dimension by manipulating any human he could find.
Native residents of the town had already defeated Bill Cipher on a previous occasion and also were kind enough to leave valuable instructions behind. However Ford Pines, upon visiting the town stumbled across a cave and accidentally read the instructions which summoned Bill Cipher back. Bill could enter Ford’s dreams then.
In the series finale, Ford Pines describes a way to get rid of Bill Cipher by creating a zodiac circle where each person in the circle represents one of ten symbols. Ford and Stan argue, creating a distraction that lets Bill get the upper hand. Bill wants to re-enter Ford’s mind but can only do so if Ford consciously shakes his hand and agrees on it.
Ford and Stan Pine trick Bill Cipher and destroy him from existence when Ford uses a memory erasing gun on Stan’s mind. In the end, Bill Cipher’s body turns into stone.
But here’s the twist –
In the final few minutes of the episode, there’s a code on one of the bus seats which when decoded reads –
Hidden deep within the woods a buried treasure awaits
Secrets lost and statues found beyond the rusty gates
And in the last moments of the episode, an image appears showing Bill Cipher as a stone statue in a real forest setting.
Gravity Falls does exist in the real world as a town in Oregon, USA and while the rumor mill talks about possible locations for the statue, a fan favourite theory is the House of Mystery at the Oregon Vortex.
The Gravity Falls crew took a four day trip along Oregon and North California in 2013 which may be of interest, as a Reddit comment suggests the moss on the Bill Cipher in a real forest, indicates it’s been out in the wild for sometime.
There’s an ongoing discussion about the Bill Cipher statute on the Gravity Falls Reddit and there’s going to be for some time until someone discovers the statue. Just remember to not shake the statue’s hand.
Even Dipper’s last words encourage a trip to Gravity Falls –
“If you’ve ever taken a road trip through the pacific northwest, you’ve probably seen a bumper sticker for a place called “Gravity Falls”. It’s not on any maps, and most people have never heard of it, some people think it’s a myth. But if you’re curious, don’t wait. Take a trip. Find it. It’s out there somewhere in the woods. Waiting.” – IMDB
Maybe it’s time for a road trip to the real Gravity Falls.
