The Hunt Begins: Hunt A Killer experience takes over 200 acres in Darlington, Maryland – USA

fright-month-2016

A 200 acre living crime scene to explore.

Hunt a Killer is a three hour immersive experience where teams of six people will help solve the mystery of the serial killer.

The Hunt A Killer experience is described as part adventure race – to the next location, part escape room – discover and solve crime scene clues and part interactive theatre with actors.

As the event is designed in an open world format – teams are able to choose how their adventure plays out. Go in any direction located within the event’s land boundaries and see what you can discover.

Search for crime scenes, find evidence and discuss wild theories with your teammates. Then complete physical/mental challenges to collect information about the killer before time runs out. Will your team choose the path to success or failure?

hunt_a_killer

Teams attend a briefing before the Hunt a Killer experience starts at 3pm this Saturday. The FAQ says players may also need to crawl or swim(!) through other challenge sections and that not all teams will finish the experience by the 6pm deadline.

When night falls – the event turns into a party where players can talk about the day’s events over a camp bonfire. Afterwards, players can then pitch their camping tents for the night.

Tickets are $210 USD per single ticket (where a person is matched to a team) and $960 USD per team (each person $160 USD).

There’s a code on the website: KEMPER300 which gives teams a $300 discount at the moment. Since the event contains mature content, the Hunt a Killer website states only players 21 years or older are able to join.

Would you sign up for the Hunt A Killer experience?

Hunt A Killer – Website

The Hunt A Killer team are also planning something for 2017 – mysterious packages in the mail.

Today is the last voting day for the 10 Best Escape Rooms as nominated by USA Today. Experts nominated 20 of their favourite escape rooms in the USA and the Room Escape Artist team covered the story with a great post here.

The final results should be listed on the USA Today website – who will be crowned USA Today’s number one escape room?

Perhaps someone will take up the challenge to do an escape room tour to visit the top 10 US escape rooms after all the votes are tallied.

What’s Mr Robot’s Endgame and hacking easter eggs from the tv show #MrRobot

mr_robot

Cyber security engineer by day, vigilante hacker by night.

Elliot Alderson is the lead character in the tv show Mr Robot, an expert at cyber security and dreams of saving the world. He gets persuaded by a person only known as Mr Robot to join fsociety, a small group of elite hackers who are trying to take down a mega-conglomerate called E Corp/Evil Corp.

Season 2 is currently airing on television and the writers of the show have hidden one or two easter eggs in each episode. See an IP address during an episode? Type it into a web browser and see where it goes. For example, 192.251.68.254 appeared in the first episode leading to a fake website that had been set up and there’s a full breakdown for this easter egg here. Another easter egg was a hand drawn QR code, which could be scanned and led to another website.

After each episode of Mr Robot appears on television, keen fans head over to reddit forums /r/mrRobot and /r/argSociety to discuss the latest easter eggs. This Google document lists most of the easter eggs that have appeared so far in the series.

Where do all the easter eggs lead?
Kor Adana, a writer and producer for Mr Robot mentioned in a recent article:

And there is an [final] endgame. In order to get the prize, which Adana says will be available at the end of season two, viewers will have to solve all of the Easter eggs. Even if someone has cracked 90 percent of the codes hidden within Mr. Robot, there is no way to figure out the final egg without completing all of the others. – Vulture

When Mr Robot’s Season 2 ends on September 14th September 21st now, with episode twelve – expect the release of Endgame. What will it take to find the final easter egg?

The world of Mr Robot doesn’t stop there:
Web Game: There’s a 16 bit web-based game called Endgame already on the whoIsMrRobot website. It tests puzzle solving and moral dilemmas across four different levels. If you win a level, you get a certain number of chess pieces that appear on the side of the webpage. Interesting to note, fans have only been able to get 28 out of 32 chess pieces in the game so far.

My current theory is this game is going to lead fans into the release of the final Endgame (in reference to the Vulture article above!).

Mobile App: Fans can get the app called – Mr.Robot:1.51exfiltrati0n.ipa – in the Google’s Play Store or Apple’s App Store for $2.99 USD and over a few days, players get text messages from in-game characters.

The backstory is you found a smart phone near an arcade place, on Coney Island in New York. That phone belongs to Darlene, a hacker who is going to commit a huge cybercrime and the player slowly becomes part of fsociety, the group who want to bring down E-Corp.

Telltale Games, the creators of the game have a behind-the-scenes video of how the game came together on Youtube.

Novel: The companion novel, eps1.91_redwheelbarr0w.txt is a replica of the journal that Elliot records his thoughts in during Season 2. The book contains removable artifacts – parts of a newspaper, an envelope etc. and is released on November 1st. Join the reddit forum – /r/MrRobotRWBook.

What happened when the Season 2 trailer was released?
When Mr Robot’s Season 2 trailer was released, fans saw a phone number scrawled on the side of a cardboard box being labelled as evidence. Calling the number lead to a recorded voicemail and a short online puzzle hunt – here’s the Reddit post which details everything that went down.

In reference to the major hack near the end of Season 1, that happened on 5/09 (9th May) – the first 509 people who got to the end of the puzzle hunt and registered their details received a package from fsociety.

Thoughts
If this was done for the trailer, I’m hoping the release of Endgame at the end of Season 2 is going to be one epic online puzzle hunt.

It’s also been refreshing to see both the recent Gravity Falls ARG and Mr Robot’s current easter egg hunt and just fall down the rabbit hole for a new adventure.

And it shows that people don’t want to only watch entertainment – they want to be pulled into those worlds and play a role within them.

From lead to gold: The Alchemist’s Lab opens its doors at Adelaide’s Fringe Festival in Australia

the-alchemists-lab
From the US, Escape Room Treasure Hunt has designed an escape room that will appear during the Adelaide Fringe Festival. The Alchemist’s Lab introduces participants to a Victorian era laboratory that is rumoured to have discovered the ultimate goal in alchemy: transmutation of an element. Scotland Yard will group its detectives (participants) into groups of twelve to find out the alchemist’s secret formula by digging through the laboratory’s secret puzzles and codes.

The alchemist in question, Devon Melton Plumbum will not be in his lab for the next hour and this would be the perfect time to find out what he is up to. Will you escape with the alchemist’s gold or be left holding lead in your hands?

The whole alchemist adventure takes 90 minutes, with 60 minutes of game play along with 15 minutes at the start and end of the game for debrief.

Also the Adelaide Fringe Festival mentions on their website the actual escape room is built into a trailer which has been styled Victorian era. Interesting to note is, “all equipment, locks and puzzles … use only technology available in the period, wherever possible”.

The Alchemy Lab @ The Adelaide Fringe Festival
Date:
From Feb 12th to March 12th 2016 (doesn’t run on Mondays)
Price: $38 AUD per person

Players Wanted: Are you ready to play? A brief summary of The Game (1997 movie)

the_game

The Game (movie)

It all started with a business card labelled Consumer Recreation Services being passed across a dinner table.

Conrad is worried about his brother Nicholas Van Orton (played by Michael Douglas) who is about to celebrate his 48th birthday – the same age their father died of suicide. The brothers are having dinner one night when Conrad passes a business card over the table and asks Nicholas to ring the phone number. He tells Nicholas that he purchased a game voucher from a company called Consumer Recreation Services and before he leaves he mentions it will change his life.the_game2

Curiosity is a powerful feeling and eventually Nicholas visits the offices of Consumer Recreation Services to find out more. Arriving at the office he’s greeted with various exams he must undertake including medical checkups and psychological testing.
Unfortunately Nicholas finds out afterwards that his application to play the game has been denied.

Wondering what happened to cause his application to be rejected – Nicholas then meets Christine, who tells him that her safety was at risk while playing one of Consumer Recreation Services’ games. Soon after Conrad appears to Nicholas and tells him the company is after him too and endangering his life. However both characters are really working with CRS and Nicholas is actually playing the game in real-time within reality without realising it at first.

“The game is tailored specifically to each participant. Think of it as a great vacation, except you don’t go to it, it comes to you.” – IMDB

I won’t spoil the rest of the movie but some other memorable moments include – hundreds and thousands of golden keys pouring out of mail boxes and a vandalised house with a creepy doll clown waiting inside with a message.

Leave a comment if you have watched or have heard about The Game (1997 movie) starring Michael Douglas and Sean Penn before.

DIG Escape The Room: a new tv series and immersive experience in the USA and online #DigDeeper

dig_decoded

Dig Escape The Room: Ready to start digging? #DigDeeper

A murdery mystery involving a FBI agent located in Israel who needs to figure out a conspiracy that might change history forever is the storyline for the new tv series DIG, premiering on US television from Thursday March 5th. To promote the series before it airs – USA Network have developed a FREE (yes, FREE!!) room escape experience at select locations across the US from February 26th to March 8th. There are five locations where you can attend the DIG room escape promotion: New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Universal Studios Hollywood* in California and Universal Orlando Resort* in Florida.

* To attend the DIG room escape experience at the Universal locations, you need to buy a ticket to the relevant theme park to gain entry. It’s also a first come, first serve experience at both Universal locations. dig_decoded2

At each location up to ten people will be locked in a room for only 30 minutes, find clues, solve puzzles and get out of the room within the time list. Last time I checked (9am NYC time on Feb 20th) there were roughly 82 tickets left for New York City, 590+ tickets left for Boston and 490+ tickets at the Philadelphia location – with ticket registration only opened on February 19th. Get your free DIG room escape tickets at this link: http://digescapetheroom.com/

If you can’t make it to a US location – there’s an online DIG experience called Dig Decoded available to be played here http://digdecoded.usanetwork.com/. There’s already some parts of the experience online – you can sign up and look through Emma’s journal and crack some codes among the pages. On page three of her journal, there’s a code when deciphered leads participants to this helpful in-game website – http://www.decipherdemon.com/ – which helps explain how to solve some of the other codes scattered throughout the journal.

Starting March 5th as well, three word puzzles will be released each week for ten weeks on the Dig Decoded website. Solve each puzzle to get a code and enter the code to gain a competition entry. One person can submit up to 32 competition entries (online or via mail) during the whole experience, with the major prize a holiday for up four people to either Israel, Croatia or Norway plus breakfasts, day trips and $500 cash to the winner. Unfortunately the major prize can only be won by US residents.

Leave us a comment below if you visit a DIG room escape experience in New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, California or Florida. Otherwise what do you think of the DIG online experience?

The Beginner’s Guide to Kryptos: What’s still unsolved and could there be something buried?

kryptos
What’s the Kryptos sculpture?
A weather exposed copper sculpture made of four panels quietly sits on the grounds of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Langley, Virgina in the United States and contains an unsolved mystery that has had the world captivated for 25 years.

Since it was first unveiled in 1990, the majority of the Kryptos sculpture has been decrypted successfully by CIA officials, the NSA and the general public. However on section four, panel two – there’s still 86 characters of encoded cipher text awaiting to be decrypted by someone in the world.

The first hint relating to the Kryptos puzzle was released in 2010 – the word Berlin – but still didn’t lead to any major breakthroughs. In November 2014, the creator of the Kryptos sculpture Jim Sanborn released a second hint, the word – Clock – to help puzzle solvers decode the text. In the image below you can see the white text is still the encrypted text, while the two hints Sanborn has given are indicated in black text.

ny_times_kryptos
*Image credit goes to the NYTimes*

Some reports indicate the time taken to break the remaining cipher text would be a massive task while other reports suggest the remaining code could be broken with just a pen and a piece of paper in hand.

Once the entire Kryptos sculpture has been solved, there’s still one more piece of the entire mystery to solve. The overall sculpture contains a riddle that leads to somewhere but where it leads to is unclear. There are indications in section two of the Kryptos code (which has been decrypted) that the latitude and longitude coordinates, references the CIA’s headquarters in Langley and speculation is there may be something buried within the grounds of the CIA’s headquarters awaiting to be discovered.

“Even when that final section is solved, however, sleuths still won’t know what the sculpture means. The deciphered text contains a riddle, which will require them to be on the CIA grounds in order to solve it.” – Wired

Have you heard of the Kryptos sculpture before and would you have a go at breaking the code?
