GCHQ’s Fiendish Christmas Puzzle Book for 2016 – A licence to puzzle

Last Christmas, GCHQ – the codebreaking department of the UK government – released a puzzle in the director’s Christmas card. The puzzle was a nonogram, also known as a picross and it received widespread media attention, as it was called “the world’s hardest puzzle”. Read up on it here.

Some of the best codebreakers at GCHQ have been working hard to create this year’s puzzle, as it was released in conjunction with a GCHQ puzzle book.

The first stage of the puzzle starts with the image below – a Sudoku puzzle adapted to contain 9 letters instead of numbers and a grid of famous faces. If you get stuck on the below puzzle, check this
Reddit sub for some clues. Solve the two puzzles to unlock a website address and proceed to the next stage of the competition.

In addition, the GCHQ puzzle book is a necessary companion to the competition and contains “ciphers and substitution codes, tests of numeracy and literacy as well as picture and music challenges.” – GCHQ.

Plus HRH Duchess of Cambridge – Kate Middleton, wrote the foreword to the book and reveals her grandmother worked at Bletchley Park during World War II. Sales of GCHQ’s puzzle book will go to a mental health charity set up by Kate, William and Harry.

Get codebreaking ASAP as this year’s competition closes on February 28th 2017.

Red Bull Escape Room World Finals – Budapest, February 2017 #redbullmindgamers

red_bull_mind_gamers

Imagine a future where escape games are a competitive e-sport. Thousands of people in huge arenas or in online chat rooms, watch on as teams battle against each other in escape game tournaments across the globe.

How did this idea start off?
At the 2015 MIT Game Jam, students were given a scenario – how to create a global escape room game. The ideas developed from the game jam were reviewed by a panel and a multi-level game was developed.

Red Bull Mind Gamers Website
As of this week, news of the Red Bull Mind Gamers, Mission: Unlock Enoch competition spread like wildfire. Qualification events to get into the competition are now open to 50+ cities across the globe. 44 events in Europe, 2 events in Asia, 9 events in the Middle East and 13 events across the US.

Sadly, there’s no local qualifier events in Australia or even Canada as ExExitGames has pointed out.

How to qualify for the competition –
There are currently two ways to get into the competition: local qualifier entry or wild card entry.

– Local Qualifier Entry
– Head to the Red Bull Mind Gamers website and choose the Local Qualifier option. You’ll need to play through the online game and if successful, you’ll then go to the local qualifier event.

At the local qualifier event, you and three friends compete to unlock a digital cube with a puzzle on it. The puzzle reacts in real time, allowing all team members to interact with the puzzle at once. Each top team at the local qualifier event will then gets tickets to the world finals.

– Wildcard Entry
– If your country isn’t hosting a local qualifier event, there’s another way to get into the competition.
Play the Red Bull WildCard game, which has ten rounds of puzzles. The top four online players will form the wildcard team and attend the escape room world finals. Get all the practice you can with the top four places currently occupied with times of 46 secs – 55 secs, after completing all ten puzzles.

Besides the qualifier games, there are additional games to play on the Red Bull Mind Gamers website covering six areas: Strategy, Visual, Creativity, Logic, Music and Memory.

Wildcard qualification closes on January 15th 2017.

Escape Room World Finals – Budapest
What awaits the lucky teams in the world finals being held in Budapest, Hungary next year?
“an ultimate mixed reality Escape Room Tournament” with the “… world’s best mind gamers to tackle the ultimate challenge: to unlock a quantum escape room.” – Red Bull Mind Gamers website.

What could a quantum escape room hold?
Herb – A time travel theme?
Chris – A quantum theme to tie into the Mind Gamers movie?
Essa – Or perhaps it refers to the multiplayer aspect of an escape room, with each team member contributing their equal share of knowledge and skills?

Update 26th Nov 2016:
The Escape Room World Finals will be held between Febuary 22nd and February 26th 2017.
And what does the winning team get? A 3 day trip to Boston, USA.

Let the mind games begin! (And may the escape room odds be ever in your favour).

#TheRunner – a new reality competition where anyone in the US can join in with a mobile device

the_runner
A Runner on the Loose. A Nation on the Hunt. A Million Dollars on the Line.

Produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, The Runner is a new type of immersive reality competition. Launching on July 1st, an individual who is called “The Runner” attempts to make it to six checkpoints across the United States in thirty days.

Following the Runner are five teams of “Chasers” and any US citizen who has access to a mobile device or a social media account – Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook – who can join in as “Viewers”.

What’s in it for the Runner and Chasers? If the Runner doesn’t get caught after 30 days they walk away with a sweet $500k USD prize, otherwise they get nothing. If any team of Chasers catches the Runner, they get the current Runner’s bounty – which increases by $15k USD for each day the Runner doesn’t get caught. Viewers can also win daily cash prizes by helping any team of Chasers on social media.

The entire competition is played out in real time, with three episodes of The Runner available each day. Each morning episode covers the previous day’s events and a daily clue is released about the Runner’s location. The Runner heads off to their city/state by whatever means – walk, drive, catch a plane. The Chaser and Viewers then start working on the clue.

During the afternoon, the second episode of the day is a live update of the game across social media as the Chaser teams and Viewers try to close in on the Runner for the day.

By evening, an expert panel breaks down the day’s events and the strategies of the Runner and Chaser teams. At this time, the Runner has entered the safe zone for the day or a Chaser team has caught the current Runner, which will lead to a new Runner being released the following day.

Guess who is sponsoring the show as well? The people at Ford have struck a sponsorship deal with The Runner, ensuring the 2017 Ford Escape will feature as part of the show. (If you missed it, Intervirals wrote a post about Ford’s Escape NYC event last week).

The only downside about The Runner is that episodes are geo-blocked, so only people within the United States can view them – go90.com/therunner.

But if you’re curious enough, there are always ways around this.

And across social media:
– Official Accounts for the series giving an overall view of the action –  Facebook, Twitter, Instagram along with the hashtag #TheRunner

– Follow the Chaser teams across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat

– Or if you’re not keen on supporting one of the Chaser teams, it turns out the current Runner is gaining a loyal following at the moment on Twitter, along with the hashtag #TeamRunner

Plus, if you’re keen to see behind the scenes of The Runner – here are some of the best articles out there currently – a infographic, some of the challenges on day one and images of The Runner’s expert panel setup.

Also the initial trailer for The Runner shows some of the awesome camera work and video recording technology following the Chasers and the Runner over the next month.

Inspiration from London to Singapore, red tape, design challenges and escape room advice – Q&A with Matt from The Enigma Room Sydney

Some time after visiting The Enigma Room Sydney, I received an email from Matt – one of the business operators behind the company. He mentioned answering any questions I had about escape rooms and so I asked a few, curious to hear about the escape room business in Australia from the perspective of a business owner. Enjoy, I’ve left the answers as received and a huge thanks to Matt and The Enigma Room.

Essa 🙂

Q&A with Matt from The Enigma Room Sydney
http://www.enigmaroom.com.au/

Q. What was the inspiration to start Enigma Room and where did you play your first escape room game?
I played my first escape room at HintHunt in London. I was travelling there at the time, and saw that it was highly ranked on TripAdvisor as something fun to do, and having never heard of the concept, thought it was highly unusual that a nerdy indoor activity was more highly ranked than other typical London attractions. So I grabbed some friends who had moved to London recently and a group of us tried it out, and of course we all loved it. That was about 3 years ago.

So after coming back to Australia I thought it was just a matter of time before someone would open one locally. And I waited, and waited, but nothing really came of it, so after another trip overseas last year (this time to Singapore) where I played a few more escape rooms (Breakout, Freeing SG and Xcape) I started developing my own ideas, and told myself that if no one else was going to do it then I would do it myself.

Of course, as soon as I committed to the project a bunch of venues started opening up all around Australia, but hey, that’s totally fair enough, and in fact pretty exciting 🙂

So doing the designs for a few months on and off, I also managed to get my business partners Barry and Piyush on board. We were all mates from uni, doing university comedy revues together and hanging around with the same bunch of friends. We also enlisted plenty of other friends to help out in different capacities to help build the venue, construct some of the high-tech and low-tech puzzles and props, and plenty of other things too. At the end of the day, we’re a small independent operation that’s run by friends, and we want to be friends with all our players too 🙂

Q. Best and worst challenge you had to face when starting an escape room business?
The worst challenge starting an escape room business in Australia is probably the amount of red tape that we faced. We were hoping to open at the end of last year, but we found it exceedingly difficult to both lock down an appropriate venue and then get the relevant approvals to fitout the rooms. The particular laws and regulations in Australia heavily restrict the things you can do, from simple but fundamental concepts such as locking people in rooms, to providing sufficient ventilation and fire sprinkler coverage, to more mundane things like the type of door handles that we are required to install. All of these laws help to ensure that venues are safe, but they often take away from the immersion of any room and certainly giving people the impression that they’re ‘trapped’ in a room that they need to escape from. So navigating that took time, as well as the fact that the wheels of government turned quite slowly for us, so even when we had our plans locked in getting the final stamps of approval took an excruciatingly long time.

But the best challenge? From my personal point of view as a designer it’s making something unique and fun. Without quite knowing exactly how the Sydney market was going to react, I set about trying to design rooms which were going to be first and foremost fun to play, and that if you were having so much fun as a player you would lose track of the hour time limit and you’d come out with a big grin on your face. And coming up with different things from the puzzle design, the flow of the puzzles and how the rooms should look and feel was also an enjoyable challenge for us because we were always keeping in mind how the players would react to each element. We’re happy with the way things have turned out, but of course the process never truly ends, and we still always look at ways to keep upping the ante and improving our rooms as we go along. But in all honesty knowing that we get genuinely happy reactions keeps us chugging along as well 🙂

Q. What’s your view on the escape room market in Australia?
It’s an interesting mix at the moment. We’re an independent operator and I know of a few other independent homegrown operators (such as the highly successful Escape Room Melbourne). However, there’s a lot of players coming in from overseas, such as Paniq Room and Parapark opening up venues in Sydney, and there are also other established companies expanding into the market such as Strike Bowling with their Escapism rooms. That said, the unique thing about escape rooms is that we aren’t at all like other industries such as the hospitality industry. You can go to a cafe and love the coffee there so much so you’ll never go to the cafe next door. But with escape rooms, once you play one room, you’re done, and so you’re off to the next room or the next venue if you want more. And so the ‘competition’ isn’t really competition after all, because we hope that if people have a good experience at a venue they’ll shop around for more.

In that sense, we don’t see the market as cluttered or crowded at the moment, and in fact we’d welcome new operators with open arms. The only thing that we’re wary of is shoddy operators coming into the market, because we’re all in this together. If people end up having bad experiences, that’ll hurt the entire industry as a whole. Thankfully I think there are more operators on the “light” side rather than the “dark” side.

One other point that I’ll make which relates to your post about escape room venues around Australia. Australia presents its own set of issues because of it’s relatively low population, but also with the density of each city. Although originally a Sydneysider, I’m a Canberran now, and as much as I’d love to open up a venue in Canberra (it’s still on the cards!) it’s challenging because of the much smaller population there as well as the significantly smaller tourist market. I imagine other cities around Australia would have the same problem too, such as Hobart, Adelaide and Darwin. Obviously I hope this situation changes, but the reality is that escape rooms have a maximum earning capacity based on how many people you can get though per day, and opening up a room can require a reasonable initial investment. So although it’s not impossible, I can see that it would be a challenge to make businesses in these areas viable.

Even if you look at Sydney itself there are similar geographical issues. At the moment the majority of venues are found in the CBD or surrounds, with only Parapark (that I know of) located further out west at Macquarie Park. Yet the population of Sydney is spread far and wide in every direction, meaning the CBD isn’t necessarily the easiest place to get to for a lot of people. I wonder if we’ll see more venues opening up in further flung places such as Parramatta, Penrith, Hornsby or Cambelltown one day.

Q. Finally, any advice for potential escape room players?

Absolutely!

* Be as hands on as you possibly can. Unless you’ve been told not to touch/hold/interact with something, then do it.

* Search search search! You can solve a puzzle unless you have all the pieces in front of you, so look high and low for anything that looks relevant.

* Think about what your objectives are. Got a padlock? You’re after a key. If you see a 4 digit combination lock, then you’ll somehow need to find or generate some numbers. So keep in mind what you should be after.

* Finally, keep talking! If you find something, tell everyone in your team about it. And if you think of a solution, tell everyone about it and try it out. There are no dumb ideas until you find out it doesn’t work, but better that than discounting a crazy idea which ends up being the correct solution!

A history of room escapes – where did the international exit sign (or the green running man) come from?

a history of room escapes

A history of room escapes – the international exit sign

The international green exit sign which has a person running towards a door has become a mascot of sorts for the room escape industry. Indeed at least two room escape bloggers (Exit Games UK and Hemos Salido) use it as part of their official avatar.

Every time I see the green exit sign, I started getting curious – how was it chosen to become the universal sign to indicate this way to exit a room?exit_sign1

In the 1970s, the Japanese fire safety department held a national competition and encourage people to submit their drawings and vision of what an exit sign should be. The purpose of the competition was to find an exit sign that could be implemented throughout Japan. After testing exit signs that were submitted as part of the competition, the winner was chosen – Yukio Ota – who had created a green exit sign which showed a man running towards a door.

Over time Yukio Ota worked closely with the organisers of the fire safety competition to alter his sign after recommendations were made.
“The goal, Ota recalls, was to suggest that people should “run slowly.” – Slate

Then around 1980, ISO (the International Organisation for Standardization) was looking at standardising symbols and had already considered implementing an exit sign submission from the Russian delegation. However the Japanese delegation asked ISO to look at their exit sign submission before they went ahead with their first choice.

Eventually ISO decided on their final choice for an international exit sign and in 1985, the exit sign submission from Japan was ultimately chosen for international usage. The exit sign submission from Russia can be seen in the image below to the left while the Japanese delegation’s exit sign can be seen as the image to the right.

exit_sign2                                                           Image Credit: Slate

Without any collaboration or knowledge about the exit sign each country was working on both Japan and Russia managed to come up with very similar ideas. When Yukio Ota saw the similar designs, he had this to say, “… a fundamentally human exit sign, one that speaks to some primal cognitive notion of escape” (Slate 2010).

It also sounds quite familiar to the story about how room escapes started – there’s a Japanese origin (Real Escape Game) and also a Hungarian origin (Parapark), each with limited knowledge of the other when they started.

In America the red EXIT sign is still commonly found but it is slowly being replaced by the green running man sign, which is used in plenty of countries throughout the world or a variance of it is used. The green exit sign has become popular due to the rise of signage which simply illustrates the appropriate action to take. The world has increasingly become more globalised and creates environments where visitors may come from anywhere, speak any language and good signage helps people traverse the barriers they may face while traveling.
